CW Renews Five Shows, including ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’

For the first time in over ten years, a CW (formerly The WB) renewal press release does not contain the show ‘Smallville‘. After ten seasons, Smallville ends its run on May 13. However the “show must go on” for the network, and they are not holding back on renewing a good chunk of their current lineup. The CW has announced today via a press release that they have renewed Supernatural, Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries,America’s Next Top Model and 90210. All shows were considered favorites to be renewed but we now have the official word.

April 26, 2011 (Burbank, California) – The CW Network has given early pickups to fiveof its established series for next season, including an All-Star Cycle of America’s Next Top Model and the network’s top-rated drama The Vampire Diaries. All five shows will return in Fall 2011.

With America’s Next Top Model ordered for both cycles next season, The CW’s signature reality series will kick-off the Fall with its first-ever All-Star Edition, featuring the models who became breakout characters and who had the most memorable stories from past cycles. Additional details about the cast, judges and prizes for the All-Star cycle of Top Model will be announced at a later time.

The CW’s bloodily addictive hit The Vampire Diaries was also given an early renewal, and in its sophomore season, remains the network’s most-watched show (4.0 million viewers) and the network’s number-one show among its target audience of women 18-34 (2.9/9).

Also given early pickups for next season are The CW’s scandalous guilty pleasures Gossip Girl, the network’s second most popular series with women 18-34 (2.8/7), and 90210, which posts some of TV’s largest percent increases from DVR playback, more than doubling its women 18-34 live ratings once live+7 data is included.

The network also renewed fan favorite Supernatural, which enters its seventh season next year. In moving to Fridays last September, Supernatural immediately helped make The CW more competitive on the night and dramatically contributed to year-to-year gains on Friday of 66% in adults 18-34 and 60% in viewers.

Game of Thrones renewed for Season 2

Following strong critical and viewer response to the series’ April 17 debut, HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.

“We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” said Lombardo. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”

Based on the bestselling fantasy book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, GAME OF THRONES follows kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and noblemen as they vie for power in a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime.

Among the early critical raves, TV Guide has called the show “a crowning triumph” and “brilliant,” while the Los Angeles Times termed GAME OF THRONES “a great and thundering series,” as well as “wild and bewitching.” The Hollywood Reporter praised the “excellent storytelling, superb acting and stunning visual effects,” and the New York Post observed that the “art directing, acting and incredible sets are as breathtaking as the massive scope of the series.”

The gross audience for the premiere night of GAME OF THRONES on the main HBO channel was 4.2 million viewers.

Five years.That’s the amount of time that the new six-episode Spartacus “prequel” goes back, in order to tell the story of what happened beforeSpartacus arrived at Batiatus’ ludus.Spartacus: Gods of the Arena premieres this Friday at 10 PM on Starz.At a presentation last week at the Television Critics Association conference in Pasadena, the producers and stars of the show talked about the production, which was originally planned to give star Andy Whitfield time for cancer treatments (he did not respond well, and the part was subsequently recast for season two).“We basically cut out all the boring parts,” executive producer Steven DeKnight said, describing how they were able to tell a Spartacus-worthy story in a mere six episodes. “We hit the ground running.

Starz recast the Spartacus star

The New Spartacus Has Been Cast

he Australian film and TV actor Liam McIntyre has officially been chosen to replace Andy Whitfield in the title role of Spartacus in Starz’ second season of the thrilling series. Whitfield, many may recall, stepped down from the role due to health issues. Production is scheduled to begin in New Zealand by Spring 2011.

Chris Albrecht, the President and CEO of Starz, says in the press release:

“Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead ‘Spartacus’ forward,” Albrecht notes. “It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he’s dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going.”

Smallville Super Star Michael Rosenbaum returning to Season Finale

After nearly a year of will-he-or-won’t-he speculation, Michael Rosenbaum has inked a deal to reprise his role as Smallville‘s Lex Luthor in the two-hour season finale airing May 13,

Michael Rosenbaum Says :

“I’m delighted to return for the series finale,” Rosenbaum tells TVLine exclusively. “I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who madeSmallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness, and even their threats. Ha ha.”

The actor continues, “I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again. Oh, and for Lex to become the bad-ass he’s destined to be.”

Executive producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson say of Rosenbaum’s encore, “It feels like the stars are aligning, literally. We couldn’t be more excited. And as far as the way he returns… there’ll be no doubt about how Lex becomes the great rival in Clark Kent’s life. He is the villain of the story.”
